You don’t need to pay to advertise. I have worked online for over four years and have never needed to pay for a top ranking in Google or other search engines. You need to optimize your website to reach a high ranking – through Search Engine Optimization. Number one thing is to create high quality, keyword-rich content (articles which support the theme of your site)
You need to know what keywords you are targeting before you even begin though – can’t really try to reach a goal without knowing what it is exactly. There are many things you can do:
1. Advertise with Google Adsense or Yahoo! Publisher for example.
2. Use Meta tags in your HTML code.
3. Update your page, do not have it there for years and years with the same old stuff.
4. Use standards suggested by the W3C for programming/designing your webpage, like the usage of XML, CSS, Javascript, etc.
5. Offer good content in your website. Remember that offering great and useful content is so important to make people visit you.
6. Do not use 100% Flash site. That will make your site hardly appear in the search engines, or just not to appear.
7. Do not use long pages. Use pagination instead if a page in the site is too long. If the scroll becomes too long, that page or article would not appear or would hardly appear for the search engine. Short articles like the ones in Wikipedia are great for appearing in the search engine.
In general, remember that the best way to have visits is by appearing in the search engine. If you are not a huge popular company, direct visits would not come in a good percentage. If the site belongs to a little not well known company, probably 25% of the visits would be direct visits and 75%, visits from the search engine. Accordingly, FOCUS ON APPEARING IN THE SEARCH ENGINES!
